There have been a total of four explosions at the plant since it was damaged in last Friday's massive quake and tsunami. The most recent were blasts at reactors No. 2 and No. 4.
Prime Minister, Naoto Kan said that radiation has spread from four reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant was one of the hardest-hit in 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami. People who stay within 19 miles (30 kilometers) of the plant to stay indoors or risk getting radiation sickness. As the level seems very high, and there is still a very high risk of more radiation coming out," Kan said.
The latest blast was early Tuesday in the plant's Unit 2 near a suppression pool, this crisis appeared to escalate late in the day when the operators of the facility said one of two blasts had blown a hole in the building housing a reactor, which meant spent nuclear fuel was exposed to the atmosphere.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano urged to the public do not go outside and to stay indoors. To close windows and make homes airtight. Don't turn on ventilators and to hang on laundry indoors.
List of Diseases
According to Dr. Manny, this can lead to the outbreak of a number of serious, life-threatening diseases. Here is a list of the diseases typically linked with tsunamis, according to the World Health Organization (WHO):
1. Plague - Potentially deadly disease either by bitten of a flea that carries the plague bacteria or spread from person-to-person, when an infected person coughs in the presence of another person. Symptoms are: chills, fever, severe headache, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, seizures, and bleeding. Without immediate treatment (within 24 hours) most people infected with the plague will die.
Cure: Antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, Oxygen, intravenous fluids, and respiratory support are usually needed to treat plague.
Prevention: wearing Disposable Face Mask or N95 Face Mask to prevent the airborne viruses.
2. Cholera – Attack the small intestine and causes large amounts of watery diarrheal. Symptoms are: abdominal cramps, dry skin, excessive thirst, lethargy, nausea, vomiting, and a rapid pulse.
3. Hepatitis - Hepatitis A and E, causes the liver to swell and is associated with symptoms such as fatigue, itching, fever, nausea and yellow skin (jaundice)
4. Leptospirosis – A severe bacterial infection spread through drinking contaminated water (presence of animal urine). Symptoms are: cough, fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and chills.
5. Typhoid Fever - A bacterial infection that is spread through contaminated food and water. It could be spread for years by unknowingly carriers of the disease. Symptoms are: fever, abdominal pain, diarrheal, chest and belly rashes, hallucinations, nosebleeds, severe fatigue, lethargic feeling, and weakness.
6. Japanese encephalitis - A virus that causes the brain to swell and spread through mosquitoes. Symptoms are: fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, abnormal movements, occasional convulsions (especially in infants), coma, and paralysis.
Disposable Face Mask
3 ply (3-Layer construction) surgical face mask with high
bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE), low breathing resistance, soft, odourless, non-irritating, comfortable superior fit, fibreglass free.
Exceeds 99% filtration efficiency at .1 microns.
Designed to help prevent the spread of germs and disease.
Each layer is ultrasonically bonded to eliminate the sewing pinholes that permit bacteria to migrate from one side to the other.
N95 Face Mask
A mask that added protection from airborne viruses such as Air Particle, Pneumonic Plague, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and Air Filter.
NIOSH approved N95 masks meet or exceed the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for disease prevention.
N95 is a "cup" style NIOSH-approved respirator mask, held securely to your face with two elastic straps that go behind your head, providing a comfortable fit over your nose and mouth.
Disposable N95 face mask can be worn up to maximum of 8 hours , depending on the environment and should be carefully thrown away (without touching the outside of the mask) immediately after using.
A communicable disease should wear face masks without the exhalation valve to help prevent transmission of the disease to other people.
